Sir Ian McKellen (born 25 May 1939) is an English actor. He has received several important awards and nominations including a Tony Award, a Golden Globe Award and two Oscar nominations and is considered to be one of the greatest stage and screen actors in the world. In 1991 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his contributions to the performing arts.
Ian McKellen is homosexual and has been active in the gay rights movement ever since he came out of the closet in 1988, when "Section 28" (part of the Local Government Act 1988) was passed, prohibiting local authorities in the UK from promoting homosexuality.
Some of McKellen's most famous and important roles include Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, Magneto in the X-Men films, James Whale in Gods and Monsters and Richard III from Shakespeare's play of the same name.
A few months ago I sent a letter, a self-addressed stamped envelope and a photo to be signed and today I received it back. Since Ian McKellen is one of my favourite actors, this is a great success for me.
